Skala
is the major town of Patmos Island, and it is also the
Island’s port. Skala remains as the Island’s most important
village – even taking on the name of “city of Patmos”
as it is the most populated and often visited village
in Patmos.
Because Skala offers most of the public services as it is the only port in the Island, Skala has a vast selection of supermarkets, souvenir shops, restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, and everything found in a bustling city. Although Skala is a busy village, the quiet and warm island atmosphere is preserved in this historic port.
Aptly called Skala (or stairway), people from various walks of the world, tourists or pilgrims alike, enter Patmos via the “stairs” or Skala. In Patmos, all roads lead to Skala, as tourists find themselves crossing Skala every time they wish to go to other villages. Skala is linked to the other villages either by land with buses and cars as transportation, or by boats to beach points and small islands
