This monastery stands on a hill that shares its name, with a bright cross, near the village of Skala. It was founded by St. Makarios Notaras, who was scorned by the bishop of Korinth as he was accused by the Turks to have been the catalyst of a revolution during the “Orlov Events”.
After being neglected for a long period of time, the monastery has been rebuilt and transformed by archimadrite Gerasimos Mihelis. Scholars have put his transformation of the convent into “a heaven on earth”. Just recently, via the contributions of both the archimadrite and the “Friends of Panagia Koumana’s Society”, a new church filled with the same beauty and splendour has been erected.
The monastery celebrates more than just masses, but also weddings, and other services like baptisms and festivals of saints. The month of June is held in high regard for this monastery as they hold the most important festival in this time – festival of All Saints. The monastery has enamoured visitors because of its lush greeneries, birds, and its scenic view.
